Usually each family belongs to one of the Buddhism temples in Japan, of course, if you're Buddhism. In the village, there're quite a few temples and shrines even though it's not so big. And they're all different sect.
One of the temple near my house has three day summer school for kids.
But I didn't have that when I was small, which is partly because my parents didn't care about it or my town didn't think it important.
