Japanese futon can be hard and too flat for you if you get used to sleeping on a bed. One American visitor told me it was too hard for her to sleep. So since then I prepare two futons to make bed for my foreign friends. And also I care for its orientation. It's good to put your head in the north direction.
So far it's been successful and they can sleep very well !
I hope they were not too plite to me.
