The Handmade Roof of the Okatmoto Otaki Shrine (1)2012.11.01

Its picture was on a magazine published in Japan last month.

The other day we had a chance to see a carpenter peel the bark of a tree, hinoki, which will be used for repairing the roof. It was raining but there were quite a few people joining the event.

By the way, the woman holding the magazine is Sara from NY. It's her third week for learning papermaking at Udatsu Museum this week. She's been doing great in communicating with the local people here in Echizen Washi without any help for her Japanese. I'm sure it's not easy to live in abroad especially for Westerners in Asian countries  especially if it's her/his first time to stay.
